Another running gag is Luffy's slow reaction time, especially to freezing temperatures. While he desires to become Pirate King for freedom instead of power, Luffy does have an interest in pirates and is respectful. Following his long battle against Charlotte Katakuri for nine hours inside of the Mirror World, Luffy was capable of strengthening and mastering Kenbunshoku Haki to the point of being able to see slightly ahead in the future just like Katakuri, which he later uses to great ability on Wano to help Hyogoro to dodge Llamaman and Madilloman. He even smiled when he was nearly executed by Buggy in Loguetown, although he did have a look of shock and surprise in his eyes before this happened when Sanji and Zoro tried to rescue him. That does not mean that he will not break his promises, as he did only at critical points that would otherwise invade his moral compass, such as avenging an offended friend. However, unlike other pirates who have a reputation as a psycho (like the Killer of the Marines Caribou or Bellamy) for unjust violence against civilians or authorities, Luffy gained his reputation for helping his friends in the face of power, usually passing over beyond the bounds of reasoning.
